Microsoft Shipping Hololens 2

The Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 has started shipping this month. This bad boy, which is a follow up to the 2016 device, will set you back a cool $3,500 USD, and that is just for the headset.

Looking at the sizzle reel that Microsoft released earlier this year, along with the price point it is clear that this hardware is for professionals and not consumers. They are targeting industry professionals or larger businesses that can connect their entire teams with the headsets.

In particular there are some great applications within manufacturing and medical professions, for this type of technology. The hands-free video communication system allows users to connect remotely with experts operating on PCs or mobile devices in real-time for on-the-spot support.

The Virtual Immersive team haven't managed to get our hands on the new device as yet, but its reported to include a number of improvements. It is much more comfortable, it has a much larger field of view, and it’s better able to detect real physical objects in the room. It features new components like the Azure Kinect sensor, an ARM processor, eye-tracking sensors, and an entirely different display system. Hand gesturing in particular is also reported to feel far more natural compared to the original device.

The addition of eye-tracking injects a new layer of interactivity to the user experience and the flip-up visor makes getting in and out of experiences much more convenient. Voice commands, navigation, interactivity with 3D objects, virtual collaboration - almost every aspect of the HoloLens experience has been fine-tuned and upgraded.

The HoloLens 2 is another step in the right direction for the augmented, virtual and mixed reality industry. Over the coming years the wearables space is going to become the new playground for businesses and consumers and this device feels like another key stepping stone for where the technology is headed.
