Apple to launch AR glasses early 2020

According to research , Apple will begin mass production of AR headset before the end of this year and will launch the device as early as Q2 2020.

MacRumors, first reported that the company will be working alongside various third-party eyeglass brands prior to launch, which suggests that Apple’s device could be more of a modular attachment rather than a full headset.

TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says they could arrive in the second quarter of 2020.

Apple has been heavily invested in developing ARKit for mobile devices, but the glasses themselves have been a closely-guarded secret. Kuo says the headset would be positioned as an iPhone accessory and it would work first and foremost as a display.

It makes sense that Apple would be taking a wait-and-see approach especially given competitors like Magic Leap, Microsoft and Google have not seen consumers pick them up in big numbers.

However, with Facebook announcing that they are also producing their own AR glasses as part of a deal with Ray-ban, and Snap Spectacles 3 being released later this year, it's clear that standalone AR headsets are poised to replace smartphone technology at some stage the next few years.
